Sydney to be Invaded by Culture this January
19th January 2020
The Sydney Festival Returns January 8th.
Australia’s greatest cultural celebration returns to Sydney, January 8-26. The Sydney Festival (SYDFEST) is sure to live up to its reputation as one of the leading cultural festivals in Australia and beyond. Hailed on the international stage, the first SYDFEST took place in 1977 and has since grown to become one of the foremost cultural festivals on the planet. Past musical artists include Björk, Brian Wilson, Grace Jones, Manu Chao, Elvis Costello, AR Rahman, Cate Blanchett, Ralph Fiennes, Robert Lepage, The Flaming Lips, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Peter Sellars, Sir Ian McKellen, and David Byrne & St. Vincent.
At this event, music is not the only attraction. SYDFEST 2020 also includes theatre and dance performances, art installations, circus shows as well as talks and workshops – and don’t worry about going hungry. The festival has partnered with some of Sydney’s top restaurateurs to provide culinary rest-stops near performance venues.
One of the highlights of this year’s SYDFEST includes Dodecalis Luminarium. Created by Architects of Air (UK/AU), Dodecalis Luminarium delivers enormous air-filled domes and mazes inspired by natural forms, geometric solids, and Islamic and Gothic architecture. The labyrinth of tunnels connects three enormous Dodecadomes which create a sensory wonderland of light and shape.
Another 2020 feature is Air Play. It is described as a “visual poem, using no words. Umbrellas fly, fabrics soar over the audience, balloons swallow people, and snow swirls, filling the stage.” Air Play is the brainchild of the husband and wife team dubbed Acrobuffos. Hailing from the United States, Acrobuffos have partnered with kinetic sculptor Daniel Wurtzel whose work has been featured on Broadway, Cirque du Soleil and in museums around the world. Their performance at this year’s SYDFEST is not to be missed.
SYDFEST 2020 takes place in venues across the city including, The Sydney Opera House, Barangaroo, Sydney Town Hall and many more. With so many events and performances to choose from, the festival conveniently provides curated multipack tickets. Grab your tickets now before it’s too late.
